Why give?

Ways You Can Help.

At Community Roots Society, we believe that a thriving community starts from the ground up- quite literally. Our community garden in Mahone Bay is more than just a place to grow vegetables; it’s a space where neighbors come together, friendships blossom, and everyone has access to fresh, healthy food.

But we can’t do it alone!

Donate Your Time

Your time is one of the most valuable gifts you can give.

Share your skills. Have a green thumb, carpentry skills, or event planning experience? We’d love your help!

Lend a hand at events. Assist with workshops, community meals, and fundraising events.

Be a Mentor. Teach children and adults about gardening, sustainability, and healthy living.

Even an hour of your time can make a world of difference. From one seed a garden blooms, from one act a community thrives!

Giving FAQs

  • During the Covid pandemic, our family faced the challenging decision to close Circa 1860 Kitchen + Public House. As time went on, we witnessed the impact of restrictions on our community, family, and friends. This led us to the idea of providing nourishment in a way that fosters deeper connections. When the opportunity arose to acquire the land behind our restaurant, we were fortunate to have the original family members agree to sell and donate a portion for the establishment of a community garden.

In many ways, the garden has become a symbol of our belief that "home is where the heart is," and ours is here, in Mahone Bay. This garden serves not just as a source of fresh produce, but as a gathering place for the community to come together, share stories, and build relationships. It embodies the spirit of togetherness that we cherish, reminding us that, despite the challenges we face, we can cultivate a sense of belonging and support within our neighborhood.

  • We use donations to purchase and support programming, supplies, and resources that enhance our community gardening initiatives. Your contributions enable us to acquire seeds, soil, tools, and other essential materials needed for successful gardening. Additionally, they will help fund workshops, educational sessions, and community events that foster learning and collaboration among members. Every donation plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable gardening practices and building a resilient community in Mahone Bay. Thank you for your support.

  • In five years, I envision the Community Roots Society garden in Mahone Bay as a thriving hub of biodiversity and community engagement. Our focus will be on creating a sustainable ecosystem that not only produces a variety of fruits and vegetables but also serves as an educational resource for residents of all ages.

The garden will feature expanded growing areas with diverse plant varieties, including traditional crops and innovative permaculture techniques. We aim to integrate native plants that support local wildlife, enhancing the ecological health of our space.

Further, we will foster a strong sense of community by increasing volunteer opportunities and hosting workshops on gardening, sustainability, and cooking. This will help to cultivate a deeper connection among residents and promote the sharing of knowledge and resources.

In addition, we will enhance our partnerships with local schools and organizations to facilitate educational programs, encouraging children and adults alike to engage with nature and learn about the importance of local food systems.

Overall, I foresee our garden becoming not only a source of fresh produce but also a vibrant community space that promotes collaboration, environmental stewardship, and a sense of belonging for all members of Mahone Bay.
